His Name Shall be Called Jesus

It was important for the Father to name His Son, so naming Jesus wasnt left up to Mary and Joseph to choose a name from those that were trending that year. He wasnt named after a favorite grandfather or even his ancestor David. No, he was named by His Heavenly Father with a name that spelled out his destiny: He will save his people from their sins. (Mt 1:21)

St Paul then tells us that something changed after Christs crucifixion and His name went from being a simple name that any Hebrew young man might have, to one that stands above all names.

And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth…” Phil 2:8-10

The name Jesus is often on our tongues; we pray, worship, preach, and testify to the wonder of who Jesus is and the amazing ways he keeps on saving his people from their sins. But perhaps its fitting at the beginning of the year, to pause and reflect more deeplythat this name we are so familiar with, is the name above all names. Perhaps as we do, we too might be led to bow our knee and mark this day with worship.
